Function: Its primary job is to create a secure, conductive link between a cable and a power source or another device.
Physical Form: It typically consists of:
Pins/Prongs: The metal conductors that insert into the socket. The number, shape, and configuration vary by standard (e.g., two flat pins in North America, two round pins in Europe, three pins including a ground pin).
Insulated Housing: The plastic or rubber casing that protects the user from the live pins and holds them in place.
Cable Grip/Strain Relief: A reinforced section where the cable enters the plug, preventing the wires from being pulled loose.
